For Everyday Heroes is a media outlet dedicated to supporting those who face challenges head-on. As a plane pilot and first responder—with firsthand experience of being trapped in the snow and living in complete autonomy for weeks—I understand the critical importance of preparedness and reliable gear. I’ve curated a selection of trusted information sources and essential products to help you stay prepared. Each recommended product is carefully chosen for its performance and reliability, with a preference for well-known brands and U.S.-made items. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases, but this does not affect the price you pay. For more information, visit foreverydayheroes.com.

Essential for Snow Storm Safety
1. Be Ready to Stay Home, Warm, and Connected
- Flashlights & Batteries – Keep backup lighting handy with LED lanterns.
- Non-Perishable Food & Water – Maintain at least three days’ worth of supplies. Here’s a U.S.-made emergency food kit with a 25-year shelf life.
- Portable Phone Charger – Stay connected during power outages with a power bank or a larger DC/AC power unit to run small electrical equipments..
- Chemical Body and Hand Warmers – Stay warm with these hands and body warmer from Sport Temp.
- Backup Heat Source – A portable gas heater designed for indoor use can be a lifesaver, always combined with a carbon monoxyde detector. Ensure it comes from a trusted manufacturer and has an auto-shutoff feature, such as this gas heater from Mr. Heater.
2. Stay Safe While Traveling
I assume you already have winter tires on your car and tire chains in the trunk.
If you need to drive, make sure you have the following items on hand:
- Emergency Car Kit – Include waterproof gloves, a headlight, a shovel, jumper cables, a tow rope, and a flashlight; you’ll find kits like this one online.
- Night-in-the-Car Kit – Keep snacks, water, a knife, lighters, a first aid kit and blankets in your car. Add a 12V electric kettle and an emergency sleeping bag -Drinking hot water and keeping the heat in your body is the winning combo to stay warm.
- Being seen: I like to also keep flares in my car (not LED but super-bright chemical) to make sure I can be seen if needed, in the car or away from it, even in a storm.
